What is Coaching?

Coaching is:

  • "a process that fosters self-awareness and that results in the motivation to change,
as well as the guidance needed if change is to take place in ways that meet
organizational needs" (David Dotlich and Peter Cairo, Action coaching, 1999),

  • "expanding people's capacity to make a difference with individuals, organizations,
and their world. It involves impacting people's visions and values and offering them a
powerful assist in reinventing who they are being, their thinking, and behaviour that is
consistent with achieving what they need to achieve" (Robert Hargrove, Masterful       Coaching, 2003),

  • "a trusted relationship where the coach becomes a partner in the executive's journey
toward greater competence and effectiveness" (Mary Beth O'Neill, Executive       Coaching with Backbone and Heart, 2000),

  • Inspires, empowers, and enables the coachee
  • Focuses on the coachee's growth and development
  • Provides objective feedback to nourish the coachee's growth
  • Helps the coachee with personal transformation and behaviour change
  • Is a thinking partner for the coachee
  • Is a sounding board for the coachee
  • Holds the coachee accountable
  • Is a cheerleader for the coachee's accomplishments

What are the benefits of Coaching?

Research shows that "more and more business owners/managers and organizations are hiring business coaches to help them develop, promote and grow their business, their staff and themselves"(Perry Zeus & Suzanne Skiffington, Coaching at Work, 2002).

Freas says that coaching "helps executives become more effective; effective executives create more satisfied employees; satisfied employees create more satisfied customers; satisfied customers create higher profits"(Marshall Goldsmith, Laurence Lyons & Alyssa Freas, Coaching for Leadership, 2000).
