What is MBTI®?

The Myers-Briggs Type IndicatorŪ (MBTIŪ) is a self-report questionnaire. MBTIŪ provides individuals with a tool that helps them understand themselves and others. The MBTIŪ builds on the work Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist (1875-1961), completed on psychological type theory. His theory is based on the belief that differences in people are not random - rather they are innate and form patterns -- types.

MBTIŪ helps people discover their natural preferences thereby helping them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the differences they see in others. This understanding provides a basis for appreciating the differences in others and learning to value the uniqueness others bring.

"The point is not to discover which type a person is, but to appreciate and respect different approaches" (Betsy Kendall & Sally Carr, Developing Leaders)

Why should I take the MBTIŪ?

Taking the MBTIŪ inventory and receiving feedback will help you identify your unique gifts. The information enhances understanding of yourself, your motivations, your natural strengths and your potential areas for growth. It will also help you appreciate people who differ from you. Understanding your MBTIŪ type is self-affirming and encourages cooperation with others. (Isabelle Myers, 1998)

More than 2 million assessments are administered to individuals each year in the United States. It has been translated into 21 languages.

What does MBTI measure?

The MBTIŪ describes an individual's preferences on four dimensions (dichotmies): Extraverted vs Introverted; Sensing vs Intuitive; Thinking vs Feeling; Judging vs Perceiving.

  • Extraversion or Introversion
  • Sensing or INtuition
  • Thinking or Feeling
  • Judging or Perceiving
